Dating can be an extremely enjoyable experience for some people. The people that reap the positive benefits from dating are usually the ones who know how to date. For those that do not know how to date, the experience can be excruciating, stressful, and anticipated with dread. Dating is really an art that requires a delicate balance of displaying the best parts of your personality in a unique and positive way while holding the interest of the person or persons you are engaging. In order for one to achieve this, one must learn how to exude confidence and realize that there are certain guidelines to abide by when dating.
How Counseling can Aid you in Dating:
You might be asking yourself, “With all of the information on dating that is available, why should I see a counselor for dating advice?” It is true that there is an overabundance of information on dating via books and websites. While much of the information out there might be useful, it is geared toward a general audience. Every person is different and has their own unique problems and hang-ups which is why seeking a counselor who specializes in dating is a good idea.
My personal approach involves tailoring the dating information and advice that I give to fit the needs of the individual and their distinct problems. Sometimes there are deep-rooted problems which are preventing people from dating or dating effectively. These problems will be brought to the forefront and dealt with on a personal level. You will often see generalized lists or guidelines such as, “The 10 worst things to do on a first date”. As I stated earlier these can be helpful but, they are not geared toward the individual whereas my method is geared toward the individual.

Online Dating
Online dating is a much different experience than in-person dating. Many people enjoy online dating because they can do it in the comfort of their own home, they can be more selective, and they don’t have to stress out over the spontaneous social interactions. There are also some downsides to online dating as well. For instance, it is much more difficult to figure out if people are telling the truth online and to get a clear perception of the person before actually meeting them.
Counseling can also be beneficial for those having difficulties with online dating. Online dating can be just as frustrating as in-person dating although the frustrations may originate from different sources (e.g. no inquiries into your profile, sudden drop-offs in communication). Talking things through with a trained professional can help you to maximize the positive returns in your online dating encounters.
